Making Some Stuff for Mom This Year

If I could just get some tips on earring making, then I’d be in business. You see, my mother has a very large earring collection, and they’re all quite lavish. I know that I could buy her something from the holidays, but she’s always talking about how we never make her anything. So I talked to my sister, and we’re both going to make her something really nice for the holiday season. I decided on earrings because as I mentioned, she really has a nice big collection of them and considering her eclectic taste with regards to the subject, I don’t think that I could easily screw this one up. My sister will also be making something, as she’s going to be putting together a really nice scrapbook with memories of the four of us throughout the years. My dad is always taking pictures, so it should not be hard to find photos for a nice foundation.

The Use of Metallic Thread

Metallic thread can add pizzazz and sparkle to a sewing or quilting project. It can be used sparingly or profusely, depending on the effect you hope to achieve. There are several steps to take that will lessen the instance of thread fraying or breaking. Steps like using a needle made especially for the thread; using a slightly larger needle; sewing slowly; and threading the machine so that there is less stress on the thread.

It’s important to reduce the friction of the thread on the needle, so using a larger needle can accomplish that goal. Loosen your top tension on your sewing machine to 1 and if the thread is made with real silver like Superior Threads metallic threads, it may need to be loosened even more. Thread the machine with the spool sitting behind the machine. This allows the thread time to relax before it has to begin performing. Stitch slowly when you do start sewing. This extra precaution will contain breakage and straining.

The best bobbin thread to use with metallic thread is smooth polyester. If you’re sewing with a #90 metallic thread, use a size 14 needle. This thread size and needle combination should keep friction down to a minimum and reduce instances of breakage and fraying of the thread. There are needles made specifically for sewing specialty threads. For metallics the needles have an elongated eye, a sharp point and a special scarf. Thread that is wound onto a cone needs to sit on a separate cone holder to achieve the length needed for the thread to relax and run easily through the sewing needle.

The other way to sew quilt lines is to put the metallic thread on the bobbin. First sew the quilt lines using nylon thread, turn the quilt over to the wrong side and retrace the nylon stitch lines. The bobbin thread will leave the metallic thread on the right side and will blend in with the nylon thread. Sewing with specialty threads is sometimes more easily done when the thread is wound on the bobbin. This is true with metallics. Anytime this technique is needed, try using nylon thread as a guide and follow that thread on the back side. Use a bigger stitch length and stitch along the nylon thread stitch line.

Decorative stitching using specialty threads is meant to catch your eye. It can spice up a quilt or other sewing project making the topstitching sparkle. Stitching with this thread is ideal because it lends itself to creativity and embellishment.

Things to Consider in Storage Shed Plans

If you are considering the construction of a storage shed for your garden or backyard, you need to ensure that it is not only aesthetically fitting but that it meets all of your requirements. If you are planning to keep gardening tools in there, make sure that you have sufficient space for performing some potting. Check out the available storage Shed Plans and see to it that the space and design are appropriate for your purposes. And just like a house, the shed must be able to withstand the effects of weather, whether it is snow, wind or rain, for many years to come. Of course, you will also have to ensure that the design does not clash with the architecture and color of your home. Another thing to take into account is durability. While the kinds of materials utilized for the construction will have a strong influence, so will the design, such that leaks are avoided, for example.

The Best Cricut Cartridges

With more than 150 different Cricut cartridges available, it may be difficult determining which ones you should pick up, and which ones you should pass on. To make it even more difficult to decide, it seems everyone has a different list of personal faves.

To decide which ones you should add to your collection, first think of how you plan to use them. For example, if you know you are going to make all your Christmas cards and decorations with your die cut machine, take a look at the different Christmas-themed carts and pick one or two favorites based on the designs. If you are at the store, look at the back of the cart which should display a picture of the designs available. If you are shopping online, check out the Cricut website, which has pictures of the cartridge content posted.

Another way to select Cricut cartridges is to check out projects that were made be others. The company has an active message board at community.Provocraft.Com, where people post their projects. There are also several bloggers that post their projects. If you love what you see, there is a good chance that you will also love cart as well, not to mention that you can also scraplift the designs once you have it in your collection.
